What Is a Kawneer Husky 2 Concealed Door Closer?

The Kawneer Husky 2 is an overhead concealed door closer used in commercial aluminum entrance systems. Unlike a conventional surface-mounted closer that is visible on the face of the door or frame, the Husky closer mechanism is concealed within the overhead storefront framing.

This type of installation provides controlled door operation while maintaining the clean architectural appearance associated with aluminum and glass storefront entrances. Kawneer continues to document center-hung concealed overhead closer configurations throughout its commercial entrance and framing systems.

Designed for Commercial Storefront Doors

Kawneer concealed overhead closers are commonly associated with aluminum-framed commercial entrances where the closer is incorporated into the header above the door. These installations can be found in a wide variety of commercial and institutional buildings.

Typical applications include retail stores, shopping centers, office buildings, schools, universities, medical facilities, restaurants and other commercial storefront entrances.

Concealed Overhead Closer vs. Surface Door Closer

A concealed overhead door closer is installed within the framing above the door. A surface closer is mounted visibly to the face of the door or frame. Because the installation and door preparation are different, these closer styles should not be treated as interchangeable replacements.

If your existing closer is hidden inside the storefront header, identify the original closer and its installation before ordering a replacement. Existing arm, pivot, spindle and mounting arrangements can all affect compatibility.

How a Kawneer Husky Concealed Closer Works

The closer is mounted horizontally inside the overhead aluminum header. The closer mechanism works with the entrance's pivot and arm arrangement to control the movement of the door as it opens and returns toward the closed position.

Because most of the operating mechanism is hidden above the door, an older concealed closer may not be immediately visible during a basic inspection. Removing the appropriate header access cover may be necessary to identify the existing closer.

Replacing an Existing Kawneer Husky 2 Door Closer

Older commercial storefront entrances can remain in service for decades. Over time, the concealed closer may begin to leak, lose closing control, fail to return the door completely to the closed position or otherwise require service.

In many cases, the aluminum storefront door and frame can remain in place while the failed Kawneer Husky concealed closer or related hardware is serviced or replaced. Correct identification of the existing hardware is important before selecting a replacement.

Signs Your Concealed Door Closer May Need Service

✓ Door closes too quickly
✓ Door closes unusually slowly
✓ Door will not fully close
✓ Door movement feels uncontrolled
✓ Hydraulic fluid is visible in the header
✓ Closer no longer controls the door properly
✓ Excessive movement or play develops
✓ Existing closer is worn or damaged

How Do I Identify a Kawneer Husky 2 Closer?

Concealed closers can be difficult to identify because most of the mechanism is hidden inside the storefront header. Before ordering replacement hardware, inspect the existing closer and installation carefully rather than identifying it only by the appearance of the entrance.

Helpful information to verify includes:

  • Manufacturer markings on the closer body
  • Closer model or series markings
  • Overall dimensions of the existing closer
  • Door and frame configuration
  • Center-hung or other existing pivot arrangement
  • Existing closer arm and spindle configuration
  • Mounting and attachment points
  • Photos of the closer inside the header and the complete door

Important: Identify the Existing Closer Before Ordering

Commercial aluminum doors that look nearly identical can use different concealed closer systems. Do not assume a closer is a Husky 2 based solely on the door manufacturer or exterior appearance. Verify the closer itself and compare the existing installation with the replacement product specifications.

Overhead Concealed Installation Inside the Door Header

One of the defining characteristics of the Kawneer Husky closer is its concealed overhead installation. The closer is positioned inside the aluminum framing above the entrance rather than mounted externally to the door.

When servicing an existing installation, access to the closer is typically through the storefront header area. Care should be taken during inspection and replacement to preserve the existing aluminum framing and associated door hardware.

Inspect the Complete Kawneer Door System

When replacing an older concealed closer, inspect the rest of the entrance hardware at the same time. A worn pivot, damaged arm or misaligned door can affect operation even after the closer itself has been replaced.

Check the top and bottom pivots, closer arm, spindle connection, threshold, door alignment and other related storefront hardware for excessive wear or damage before returning the entrance to service.
