Commercial Door Butt Hinges
The most common type of commercial door hinge is the butt hinge. This hinge type features two hinge leafs. One hinge attaches in a mortise pocket on the door edge, while the other hinge leaf mounts to a mortise pocket in the door frame. On one end of each hinge leaf are knuckles. The knuckles of the two hinge leafs interconnect and a pin holds them together.

Commercial Door Butt Hinge Types
Ball Bearing Commercial Door Butt Hinges
A ball bearing commercial door butt hinge is a 4.5 inch x 4.5 inch square edge door hinge that has either 5 knuckles or 3 knuckles. Heavy weight and high traffic doors use a 5 knuckle hinge where a ball bearing is placed between each knuckle, for a total of 4 ball bearings. Standard weight and regular traffic commercial doors feature 3 knuckles and also have a ball bearing hinge between each knuckle, for a total of 2 ball bearings. The ball bearings in the commercial door hinge reduce the friction as the door opens or closes, allowing the door swing to be very smooth. Ball bearing commercial door butt hinges are higher quality and perform better than plain bearing commercial door butt hinges.

Plain Bearing Commercial Door Butt Hinges
A plain bearing commercial door butt hinge is a 4.5 inch x 4.5 inch square edge door hinge with no ball bearings between the knuckles. With this hinge design there is more friction as the door opens or closes. Plain bearings should only be used on standard weight commercial doors with low traffic.
