What Is A Commercial Steel Door

A commercial steel door is a type of metal man door also known as a walk door, primarily used in building applications for security and durability. The commercial door itself is engineered from 18 gauge thick steel which makes up the outer, exterior shell of the door. Inside of the steel door is energy efficient insulation, typically honeycomb or polystyrene insulation, allowing the door to help maintain the buildings temperature.

Exterior Building Wall Installation

An exterior building wall is the outer perimeter wall structure that makes up the building. This wall separates inside environment from the outside. Commercial steel doors are specified by architects in the door schedule for exterior wall doors. These exterior door applications include electrical room doors, restroom doors, storage room doors, utility room doors, and exit doors. The exterior building walls of commercial buildings are designed with insulation in order to make the building energy efficient and maintain the building's inside temperature. As a result, commercial steel doors are perfect for exterior building walls since the doors have an insulated core, helping to maintain the building's inside temperature.

Masonry Wall Installation

Most commercial building walls are engineered with brick, block wall, or CMU (concrete masonry unit) material. Exterior commercial steel doors use a masonry 16 gauge steel door frame that attaches to this wall type. The commercial steel door frame can attach using punch and dimple anchors with concrete sleeve bolts, or the steel frame can be set before the wall is erected, allowing the wall to be built around the door frame. Exterior commercial steel doors are designed to butt against the wall. The architect will specify how the door frame is installed in the door schedule.

Wood Stud & Metal Stud Installation

Other exterior building walls are constructed using tradition 2x4 wood studs or metal studs. Exterior commercial steel doors are installed on these building walls using multipurpose anchors that allow the frame to attach to wood or metal studs.

Interior Building Wall Installation

An interior building wall is any wall that is constructed within the confines of the building. These walls simply separate sections of the inside of the building. They are not part of the outside building wall which separates the inside of the building from the outside. Architects will specify many commercial steel doors for interior building walls. These interior door applications include: office, restroom, boiler room, electrical room, storage room, storage closet, supply room, restricted rooms, security rooms, and more.

Drywall Installation

Interior wall construction is primarily designed with sheetrock, or drywall, that covers a wood stud or metal stud wall. Commercial steel doors install on interior sheetrock walls using compression anchors that allow the door frame to secure to the wall. Interior commercial steel door frames are designed to wrap around the wall.

Types Of Commercial Steel Doors

Entry Steel Doors

An entrance door to a commercial building is the front door where all pedestrians pass through in order to gain access to the inside of the building. Commercial steel doors are the most durable and secure building entrance doors. Unlike wood doors or glass doors, steel doors do not shatter or break, making them ideal for the front entrance of any business or office building. Entrance steel doors are available with glass windows, known as vision lites, to allow clear visibility into the building. Entrance steel doors come standard with non removable pin ball bearing hinges, so that vandals are not able to remove the door hinges to breach entry. Entrance commercial steel doors come standard with a heavy duty cylindrical lever lock which securely latches the steel door into the frame. Additional security locks such as a deabolt is available to provide extra security for the front entry of the building. Commercial entry steel doors are always outswing doors, or doors that swing out away from the building.

Exit Steel Doors

An exit door to a commercial building is any rear or side door that is used for leaving the building. These doors can also be emergency exit doors. Commercial steel exit doors include a heavy duty panic bar latch located on the interior side of the door, which is a horizontal bar that can be depressed to unlatch the steel door from the frame. Commercial steel exit doors are outswing doors, designed to swing away from the building. They are available with a variety of exterior trims such as rim lock cylinders, escutcheon lever handles, outside pulls, or no trim at all.

Passage or Pass Through Steel Doors

A hallway is a passageway which connects different parts of a building. For these applications a commercial steel passage door, or sometimes referred to as a corridor door are used. Commercial steel passage doors are available in both outswing or inswing door models depending on how the architect specifies the door handing requirement. These commercial pass through doors are available with non-keyed passage lever handles or panic bars depending on architectural requirements.

Steel Fire Doors

Architects will specify on the door schedule of any commercial building blue prints which doors are fire doors. A fire door is a commercial building door that prevents the spread of fire in a building. The location of fire rated steel doors are designed with the building to ensure fire code compliance and safety. Commercial exterior steel doors are available with a variety of fire ratings up to 3 hours. While interior steel doors can be fire rated up to 90 minutes. Special fire rated door hardware such as an automatic door closer and lever handle are included to meet fire code compliance.

Commercial Steel Door Compliance

When purchasing a commercial steel door laws, code requirements, national and local jurisdictions must be taken into account in order to ensure safety for people in the building.

NFPA (National Fire Protection Association)

If the commercial steel door is a fire rated steel door, this organization specifies requirements for fire doors. This includes the fire label and how a steel door qualifies for a fire rating, as well as the fire door hardware requirements. Any fire door must comply with the requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association.

ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act)

This is a law put forth by Congress in 1990 which ensures equal accessibility for all. All commercial steel doors used for entry, exit, or passage must be ADA compliant. Steel door width, height, as well as other door hardware factors determine ADA compliance.

ANSI/BHMA (American National Standards Institute / Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association)

These are associations that specify requirements for door hardware on commercial steel doors in order to ensure safety and building code compliance. Commercial steel doors must utilize hardware that complies with ANSI and BHMA codes and requirements.

IBC (International Building Code)

Set forth by the International Code Council, this set of codes provides structural, fire, and life safety requirements for commercial steel doors in buildings. Most states use the IBC as a base code to follow. Commercial steel doors must comply with IBC codes.

Other Requirements

Depending on your building's location, local jurisdiction requirements must be taken into account as well as any other authorities in your area having jurisdiction.
