How To Replace Any Overhead Concealed Door Closer On A Storefront Door

An overhead concealed door closer, is a closing mechanism found inside of the storefront door frame. The closer body itself is concealed. Concealed closers can vary in color, some are blue, however most are a dark brown color. In this article we explain how to replace any overhead concealed door closer. For information related to cost, please refer to our article "How Much Does It Cost To Install A Concealed Door Closer."

Step 1: Identify The Overhead Concealed Closer

The first step is to identify that your commercial glass door, does indeed have a concealed door closer. Start by removing the door from the top arm. Overhead concealed closers can be end load or side load.

For end load arms, this means that the arm attachment for the spindle is located at the end of the door with two allen screws. Simply remove the two allen screws, so that the arm attachment will come off of the spindle. The door will still be held on by the bottom pivot. To remove the door from the bottom pivot, a flat head screw driver can be used to depress a small metal tab located on the door shoe (portion of the pivot assembly that is screwed to the bottom of the door).

For side load arms, the arm attachment is hidden by a small cover plate covering the spindle. This small plate attaches to the door and is held in by 2 phillips head screws. Remove those, and the side load arm attachment will be visible with 3 allen screws. Removing those will allow the door and arm to be disconnected from the spindle. Remove the door from the bottom pivot.

Be sure to set the door down carefully as to make sure it is not damaged during the installation.

Next, look up and remove the cover plate which conceals the door closer. Be sure not lose any screws.

The easiest and most convenient solution for all commercial door professionals is to replace the original concealed door closer with Automatic Door and Hardware's Hercules model concealed door closer. The reason being is, that our Hercules concealed door closer is designed with the same footprint as all competitor brand door closers so it is a direct replacement. With the Automatic Door and Hardware brand concealed closers you only have to stock one concealed closer model, making it more effective for service and repair companies. Also our unit is highly durable and reliable, so no matter the level of traffic for the entrance, the Hercules concealed door closer will provide smooth and safe operation all of the the time.

    Step 2:

Remove the old door closer from the mounting brackets. Mount the new Automatic Door and Hardware door closer in it's place. We recommend to remove the old, existing arm as well as the bottom pivot and install new ones, since our Hercules concealed closer kit includes it. However, it is up to the installer.

    Step 3:

Rehang the commercial storefront door. Adjust the closing speed and latch speed of the new concealed door closer.

    Step 4:

All done! And that's all there is to it. No matter the brand of concealed door closer you have, our Automatic Door and Hardware Hercules model concealed closer can directly replace the existing closer since we match the same footprint.
