Designed for Exterior Commercial Steel Stud Walls

This Ranger HD entrance is configured for commercial exterior wall assemblies constructed withstructural steel studs and reinforced framing. A typical installation may also include exterior gypsum sheathing or other approved structural sheathing, a commercial weather-resistant barrier, flashing, drainage components, exterior insulation, and a finished exterior cladding system.

Common exterior finishes include metal wall panels, fiber-cement siding, stucco, EIFS, brick veneer, stone veneer, insulated wall panels, and other architectural cladding. The storefront frame must be integrated into the complete wall assembly so water is directed away from the opening and the weather barrier remains continuous around the entrance.

  • Suitable for new construction and properly prepared renovation openings
  • Designed for commercial steel stud framing
  • Opening must include reinforced steel framing or approved structural backing
  • Compatible with exterior gypsum sheathing and other approved sheathing systems
  • Compatible with commercial weather-resistant barriers
  • Compatible with metal panels, siding, stucco, EIFS, masonry veneer, and architectural cladding systems
  • Frame must be anchored into structural framing or approved reinforced backing
  • Light-gauge steel studs alone may not provide adequate support without reinforcement
  • Opening must include adequate framing around the jambs, header, and sill
  • Flashing and weather-barrier transitions must be coordinated with the exterior wall system
  • Perimeter backer rod and commercial sealant are required as appropriate for the project

The storefront frame is not a substitute for structural framing, reinforced backing, flashing, drainage, or the building’s weather-resistant barrier. The complete wall opening must be designed and prepared by the project architect, engineer, contractor, or qualified building professional.

Typical Exterior Wall Assembly

A typical exterior steel stud storefront opening may include the following components. Actual wall construction varies by project.

  1. Interior wall finish
  2. Commercial steel stud framing
  3. Structural jamb studs, boxed headers, or reinforced framing around the opening
  4. Structural steel backing or approved reinforcement at frame anchor locations
  5. Exterior gypsum sheathing or other approved exterior sheathing
  6. Commercial weather-resistant barrier or air-and-water barrier
  7. Head, jamb, and sill flashing as required
  8. Drainage plane or rainscreen components when specified
  9. Exterior continuous insulation when required
  10. Metal panels, siding, stucco, EIFS, brick veneer, stone veneer, or other architectural cladding
  11. Commercial perimeter sealant between the storefront frame and finished opening

The installer must coordinate frame placement with the interior and exterior finished wall planes, wall depth, reinforcing locations, flashing system, threshold elevation, exterior insulation, and cladding thickness.

Steel Stud Reinforcement and Anchoring

Exterior steel stud openings must be properly reinforced to support the storefront entrance, door weight, operating forces, closer loads, wind exposure, and repeated commercial use. Standard nonstructural drywall studs may not provide adequate support without additional framing or backing.

  • Provide reinforced jamb studs on both sides of the opening
  • Provide a properly designed and supported header above the entrance
  • Provide structural backing at all frame anchor locations
  • Use boxed studs, nested studs, structural channels, steel tube, or engineered reinforcement as specified
  • Coordinate anchor spacing with the storefront frame and wall design
  • Use fasteners appropriate for the frame, backing thickness, substrate, and environmental exposure
  • Do not anchor the entrance only into exterior gypsum sheathing
  • Do not rely on exterior cladding or nonstructural sheathing to support the frame
  • Verify that the wall assembly can resist door operation and applicable wind loads
  • Follow project drawings, engineering requirements, and applicable building codes

Structural steel reinforcement, anchor selection, fastener spacing, and attachment design are supplied and verified by others. Requirements vary according to wall construction, entrance size, building height, wind exposure, and project conditions.

Exterior Flashing and Weatherproofing

Proper flashing and perimeter sealing are essential for an exterior commercial entrance. The Ranger HD frame includes pile weather seals around the door perimeter, but the frame-to-wall joint must also be integrated into the building’s exterior air, water, and weather-control systems.

  • Maintain continuity of the air-and-water barrier around the opening
  • Provide head flashing or a drip condition where required
  • Flash the jambs and sill according to the wall-system design
  • Lap flashing materials in a shingle-style arrangement to direct water outward
  • Coordinate sill flashing with the threshold and finished floor elevation
  • Coordinate flashing with exterior insulation and rainscreen systems
  • Use compatible commercial-grade backer rod and perimeter sealant
  • Do not block required drainage paths or weep locations
  • Confirm compatibility between sealants, aluminum finishes, weather barriers, flashing, and cladding materials
  • Follow the air-barrier, weather-barrier, sheathing, insulation, and cladding manufacturers’ installation requirements

Flashing details vary based on the wall assembly, exterior finish, climate, exposure, and local code requirements. Final flashing design and installation are the responsibility of the project contractor, architect, engineer, and qualified installer.
