What Is an Exit Device?
An exit device, or sometime referred to as a panic bar or touch pad push bar, is a type of exit door lock. Per IBC (International Building Code) and NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency), these specific types of lock are required on exit doors and fire doors since they provide a safe way for pedestrians to exit the door in an emergency situation.

Are Exit Devices and Panic Bars Required?
Unlike a traditional cylindrical lever lock, exit devices are a much more simple design consisting of a spring loaded push bar, that when depressed, releases the latchbolt and unlocks the door. This makes exit devices a very safe, reliable, and durable type of exit door hardware. Not only, is it safe but it is extremely easy to identify and use. The panic bar is long and takes up almost the entire width of the door. It is also very easy to use, making it ideal for pedestrians of all types including the handicap accessible pedestrians. For these reasons, exit devices are specified and required by all commercial building codes or fire codes.

What Is The Difference Between A Panic Exit Device and A Fire Rated Exit Device?
Although the term panic bar and fire rated exit device are used loosely, they do have a very significant difference. A panic rated exit device, or panic bar, is a type of exit device that is considered panic rated. This means that it is UL Listed which signifies it is safe and durable. However, it does not have a fire label and has not been tested or approved for use on a fire door assembly. A fire rated exit device, is an exit device that has been stringently tested by UL for use on fire doors. A fire rated exit device indicates the exit device can be installed on a fire rated door and is safe to do so. A fire rated exit device will come with special UL sticker that will be present on the device so that Fire Marshalls or Building Inspectors can quickly identify if the exit device is safe for use on fire doors.
