What is FIS on a Stanley MC521 Pro controller?

FIS stands for First Initial Sequence. It’s the initial programming and learn procedure that sets critical configuration values and allows the operator to learn travel. If FIS is not completed, the door may not operate correctly.

For the full step-by-step instructions, use our guide: MC521 Pro FIS Setup Guide.

When should I run the MC521 Pro First Initial Sequence?

You should run FIS any time:

  • You install a new MC521 Pro control
  • You replace the control or major components
  • Memory has been cleared or lost
  • The door is not opening/closing correctly due to programming or learn issues

FIS ensures your motor count, handing, switch type, and learn cycle are correctly stored.

What does A0 mean on the MC521 Pro display?

A0 typically indicates the control is in the programming flow and has accepted a change or is ready for the next step during FIS. If you see A0 repeatedly, confirm you are following the sequence in order and that you are using the correct values for your door configuration.

What does A1 mean during MC521 Pro programming?

A1 typically indicates the control has accepted the FIS parameter selections (such as motor count and handing) and is advancing through the programming procedure.

If you cannot reach A1, confirm the keypad is unlocked at parameter 99 and that memory was cleared at parameter 96 before proceeding.

What does A2 mean on the MC521 Pro display?

A2 indicates the learn cycle has completed successfully and the control is ready for normal operation.

If you never reach A2, confirm the function switch sequence was done correctly and that the door is able to move freely through a full open and close cycle.

How do I unlock and lock the MC521 Pro keypad?
  • Unlock: Go to parameter 99 and set the value to 00.
  • Lock: Go to parameter 99 and set the value to 01.

Important: Locking the keypad helps retain programming and prevents accidental setting changes.

How do I set the controller for one motor vs two motors?

During FIS, go to parameter 00:

  • 01 = one motor
  • 02 = two motors

If you choose the wrong motor count, the operator may run incorrectly or fail to complete learning.

How do I set left-hand vs right-hand slide handing?

During FIS, go to parameter 01:

  • 01 = left-hand slide
  • 00 = right-hand slide

If the handing is incorrect, the door may attempt to learn in the wrong direction or behave unpredictably.

Rocker switch vs rotary switch - where do I set this?

During FIS, go to parameter 11:

  • 01 = rocker switch
  • 00 = rotary switch

Setting the wrong switch type can cause mode selection problems (Auto, Hold Open, Off/Closed, etc.).

I do not have an electric lock. Do I skip the lock step?

If you do not have an electric lock installed, you can typically skip the lock configuration step. If a lock is installed, parameter 07 is used to select:

  • 00 = fail-safe
  • 01 = fail-secure

If you are unsure whether your package includes a lock, contact our team and we can help you confirm your configuration.

My MC521 Pro will not complete the learn cycle. What should I check?

If the learn cycle will not complete, check the following:

  • Door panels roll freely and are not binding
  • There are no obstructions in the track/threshold
  • Correct motor count and handing were selected
  • Correct switch type was selected
  • Safety devices are not triggering during learn (in some cases, temporarily isolating inputs for troubleshooting may be required by a qualified tech)

Use the complete guide to verify each step: MC521 Pro FIS Setup Guide.
