How To Make Your Bathroom Handicap Accessible?

How To Make Your Bathroom Handicap Accessible? | Sales: [email protected]

If you are a commercial building owner you need to have your bathroom handicap accessible for many reasons including safety, customer service, and accessibility. But how do you do this? In this article we tell you step by step how to make your commercial restroom handicap accessible.

Door Size

Handicap accessibility is a requirement that was put into law in 1990. One of the main requirement is the door size. Your bathroom door should be atleast 36" wide x 80" tall to be ADA compliant. Most bathroom doors are, however it is worth checking especially if your building dates back before 1990.

Handicap Door Opener

The next step to making your door handicap accessible is to add a commercial automatic door opener to it. Most bathrooms are small in size. Imagine a pedestrian in a wheelchair having to maneuver the door open while also squeezing his or her wheelchair into the small room. Adding a handicap door opener to the bathroom door will ensure easy accessibility for all pedestrians. Next mount an exterior push to open switch on the outside wall and an interior push to open switch on the inside wall. Be sure they are mounted atleast 42" high and located away from the swing path of the door. Be sure to place automatic door safety stickers on both sides of the bathroom door.

Door Threshold

Most bathroom doors are interior doors, so there are typically no thresholds to worry about. However, if the bathroom floor is tile and the outside hall floor is carpet, be sure there is a smooth transition between rooms. Large uneven floors should not be present. A transition strip can be placed to smooth the entry way, but must not exceed 1/2" in height.
