What Is A Grade 1 Door Closer

A commercial grade 1 door closer is a type of automatic closing device that has been tested for over 2 million door cycles and is the highest grade door closer you can purchase. Grade 1 is essentially a type of standardized rating on national scale set forth by ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and BHMA (Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association). At Automatic Door and Hardware we only offer high quality Grade 1 door closers, to ensure that our products will last for decades when installed on any commercial door system.

How Does A Grade 1 Door Closer Compare To Other Grades

Grade 2 and grade 3 door closers also exist however grade 2 door closers are only rated for 1 million and grade 3 door closers are only rated for 500,000 door cycles respectively. Grade 2 and 3 door closers can be very misleading since they may appear at lower price point than a grade 1 door closer, however they typically are manufactured with lesser quality components since they are not rated to last as long as a grade 1 door closer. Grade 2 and 3 door closers wear out or break down much sooner than grade 1 door closers. In fact, it is not uncommon to find a door closer that is leaking oil from it's seals to be a grade 2 or 3 door closer.

Lowest Cost Of Ownership

Grade 1 door closers are by far the best value for anyone who is in the market for a commercial door closer. The heavier duty internal components such as o-ring seals, spring, and piston, results in grade 1 door closers lasting for decades if not complete life times. When compared to lighter duty door closer models like a grade 2 or 3 door closer, which often wears down and needs replacement many times during a commercial door's life span.

Cost Of A Grade 1 Door Closer

Grade 1 door closers are usually atleast $300. However, at Automatic Door and Hardware we manufacture our own high quality door closers we call Commando, and as a result have eliminated the middle man. We pass these savings on to our customers, allowing you to save money on grade 1 door closers.

Can I Replace A Grade 2 or Grade 3 Door Closer With A Grade 1 Door Closer?

The answer is Yes! In fact, replacing a lower grade door closer such as a grade 2 or 3 with a grade 1 is recommended. Grade 1 door closers will last much longer, operate better, and save you money in the long run. What many building owners fail to realize, is that a door closer plays more of a role in your overall door's life span than just simply closing the door. If a faulty grade 2 or 3 door closer is leaking oil, the oil can destroy the primer finish on your metal door or the veneer on your wood door. If you have a glass aluminum door, it can stain the glass. Not only that, but if a grade 2 or 3 closer is damaged internally such as the piston or gear shaft, and you are still using and operating the door, it will put more strain on other door components like the hinges and will wear them out pre-maturely.
