What Is A Flush Steel Door?

A flush steel door is a commercial door with a smooth face. Flush steel doors do not have glass windows or vented louvers in the face of the door. Other door preps such as 161 cylindrical lock, 86 mortise lock, or panic exit device prep are allowed. Commercial flush steel doors are the majority of the steel door type you see in buildings. Flush commercial steel doors are commonly used for entrance, passage, exit, and storeroom door applications.

Benefits Of A Flush Steel Door

Flush steel doors have many characteristics that make it a great choice for any building.

Structural Integrity

A steel door is constructed from a heavy duty steel skin that in a lot of ways acts as an armor. Since flush steel doors do not have any cutouts in the door for a glass window or vented louver, the door has more structural integrity.

Paint Ready

Flush steel doors are primered gray. The primer is baked on the steel doors. Most businesses keep the standard gray finish on the steel doors since it looks professional. However, other businesses paint the flush steel doors to match the color in their business logo and help create a more customized atmosphere in their building.

Security

Since a flush commercial steel door does not have a glass window or vented louver, it is a better security door. Glass windows or door vents, are an easy target for vandals to attack in order to gain entry into the building. Without the glass window or louver in the door, vandals are unable to target these in the door.

Thermal Insulation

Many building owners are not aware that a flush commercial steel door with a polystyrene insulated core offers better insulation than wood doors or aluminum doors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Will Flush Steel Doors Last?

Many building owners share more concerns than just security when it comes to flush commercial steel doors. For instance the cost of ownership is a large concern. However, commercial flush steel doors have the longest product life span in comparison to any other commercial door in a building. On average a flush commercial steel door will outlast a wood door by 30 years.

Can Flush Steel Doors Dent?

Another concern by building owners is if flush steel doors dent. The answer is yes, any steel door can dent, however this can be avoided and even easily repaired if necessary. Most flush commercial steel doors should not dent very easily. 18 gauge steel is the common thickness of the steel used on the shell of the door. 18 gauge steel is a thickness that is very durable and should not dent under most circumstances. Dents typically will occur with thinner gauge steel such as 20, 22, or 24 gauge steel doors. In the event that the door application is in an environment that is very abusive, the building owner should include armor plates or kick plates on the flush steel door. An armor plate or kick plate is a .050" thick aluminum or stainless steel protection plate designed to mount to the base of the flush steel door. Armor plates are designed to absorb kicks and heavy abuse preventing any damage to your steel door. Edge guards are also available for the hinge or latch edge of the door.

Are Flush Steel Doors Expensive To Repair?

Flush commercial steel doors are by no means expensive to repair. In the event the steel door gets damaged with a dent, simple bondo can be used to fill the dent. Since commercial flush steel doors are primered gray, any gray primer from your local hardware store can be purchased to paint the bondo to match the door.

Will Flush Steel Doors Rust?

Our flush commercial steel doors and frames are manufactured from galvannealed steel. Galvannealed steel is a manufacturing process that involves a hot dip process which converts a zinc coating into a zinc iron alloy. With this coating our flush steel doors and frames are better protected from rust. Galvannealed steel is primarily used for any product application outdoors.
